Working with communicative projects in the classroom

A second language is best acquired when students use it in real-life situations. As such, how can we make the learning of a second/foreign language more project-oriented in order to make learning more meaningful? We will look at the theoretical basis of PBL, resources for scaffolding, and the practical ways in which PBL plays an important role in linguistic and cognitive intake.

Integrating ICT in the language classroom: reflection and practice

Language teachers are presented with an ever-growing minefield of ICT software and new apps/tools for language learning, which they are expected to integrate into their teaching practice. However, they may not have received appropriate training in the skills needed to do this effectively and, in addition, it is often difficult for them to find time to explore these tools in depth in order to select what is most appropriate for their learning context. Most importantly, in this process, pedagogical principles tend to take
second place to technological expertise.
In this workshop participants will first discuss why, how and when they use ICT in their teaching. They will consider the challenges and benefits of this and the criteria necessary for the selection and use of appropriate tools. They will then be introduced to the ECML/ ICT-REV inventory of online tools and OERs for language teachers (http://ict-rev.ecml.at/en- us/Resources) Finally, they will work together to design learning tasks for their students which involve using ICT and which fulfil sound pedagogical objectives.

Translation in foreign language training: Opportunity or interference?

In this interactive workshop we will explore how to develop plurilingual and intercultural competence by connecting different languages in an informed way. Translation competence includes skills that can help our students improve their foreign language learning process if we adopt a view that is far from the artifice of Grammar-Translation practices and we accept that translation is, above all, about communication. Does the students’ linguistic repertoire interfere with the acquisition of a new language or does it offer opportunities to help them discover the additional language?
Translation can help us work on three aspects, mainly: linguistic, encyclopaedic and transfer knowledge and skills. Ideas for tasks and project work for each of these aspects will be presented and shared using not only written, but also visual and oral texts.

SEQUENCING
First, an Integrated Plurilingual Approach to language learning will be presented briefly. Within this framework, the use of translation as a pedagogical tool to develop pluirilingual and intercultural competence will be discussed.
Second, translation activities to work on the linguistic, encyclopaedic and transference aspects will be carried out and discussed by the participants.
Finally, the participants can design their own tasks tailored to fit their own learning contexts. These tasks and suggestions to improve them can be shared to underline the practical orientation of the workshop.
